Stamford Urban Design Landmark Square
Project Title
Stamford Urban Design Landmark Square
Alternate Titles
Stamford Landmark Square; Stamford Center Master Plan
Description
Safdie's firm was commissioned to develop a master plan and urban renewal study for the central business district of Stamford. While developing the master plan, Safdie was involved in the design of the HABsystem, a prefabricated concrete box system for hotel structures, which he used for the 450-room hotel, allowing the placement of one complete hotel floor every day by stacking room modules with pre-finished interiors. The second component, Landmark Square, was defined by office and retail facilities around a previously constructed office tower and plaza. The last component in the master plan, Stamford Parcel 38/Atrium Hotel, was a mixed-use complex organized around a glazed atrium which was to enclose a winter garden.
