Client: Canada Jute Company
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The Canadian Jute Factory erected a large factory building on William Street, at the Southeast angle of Saint-Martin Street, in 1889. It is a three-storey, flat-roofed structure extending all the way south to Basin Street. Mr. George A. Drummond (74) was president of the company at some point, but not likely after 1902, at the time this commission took place. The Maxwell brothers provided plans for the insertion of an additional floor at the street level, creating a new basement and ground floors, and added windows on all existing elevations. A 20,000 gallon water tank, 15 feet in diameter and 13’-6” high, was placed on the roof, supported by a steel tower resting on new basement footings. The factory still stands on William Street today.
