The Winter Club Ltd. Skating Rink(1/1912-1/1913)
2055 Drummond Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Recreational, Rink and clubhouse: (clubhouse: 2 floors); brick; composite

Client: Winter Club Limited
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1912, on a site belonging to the Victoria Skating Club, the Maxwell brothers designed the Winter Club Ltd. Skating Rink. The property plan shows a long lot (72’ by 253’) facing Drummond and Stanley Streets with an existing stone and brick house that was demolished to build the new skating rink. The main façade on Drummond Street is a symmetrical composition depicting a Georgian style building dressed in brown brick. The central portion consists of two giant order pilasters marking the entry, with three identical doors crowned with arched windows. At both extremities, symmetrical windows with ornamental brick mantels mark the elevation. A very interesting and unusual detail in the Maxwells’ architecture is the long glazed-tile canopy underneath the parapet. The ground floor consists of a spacious central hall containing a monumental staircase. The gentlemen’s dressing room and the ladies’ dressing room surrounds this space. Approximately three-quarters of the whole ground floor are dedicated to the skating rink. It was built using a two-storey high steel frame. Natural light and ventilation is brought inside to this enormous space by means of three large skylights. The first floor of the front block follows a symmetrical layout. It contains a tearoom, luncheon room, card room, private card room, and the control room. The distinctive space on this level is the spacious oval clubroom overlooking the skating rink. Today, the Donnacona Navy Reserve Group uses this particular building. Most of its exterior details have been preserved, except for the glazed tile on the canopy.
