Thomas S. Stewart Cottage(8/1919-4/1920)
Sainte-Agathe, QC, Canada
Residential, Cottage [1 floor, attic, 4 bedrooms]; wood; composite

Client: Thomas S. Stewart
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1920 the Maxwell brothers designed a cottage for Thomas Shearer Stewart a son-in-law of James Gardner. This cottage located in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts overlooking Lac Brulé, borrowed some design elements from Gardner’s Cottage (85) designed by Edward in 1898. The exterior was clad with cedar shingles and the roof followed the unusual form characteristic of the Maxwells’ work. This cottage reflects the typical domestic architecture in North America during the early 20th century. They are rare examples of a decorative style inspired by the English Arts and Craft movement. On ground floor the old plans show a layout organized around a spacious living room with a massive fireplace at the center of the room.
