318 Peel Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [basement, 3 floors, 8 bedrooms, 4 servants' rooms]; brick and stone; composite

Client: Charles Francis Smith
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1909 C. F. Smith, manufacturer and capitalist, commissioned the Maxwell brothers to design his urban house located on Peel Street. They designed a large rectangular house that was set on a high basement and planned around a vast living room flanked at both extremes by the dining and drawing room with a large bow window. A broad corridor articulates the different spaces on the ground floor. The service rooms and stairs are located at the rear part of the house. The elevations of this house show Edward’s preference for picturesque architecture and for complex, irregular and romantic forms. Nevertheless, the Beaux-Arts design principles practiced by William are evident in the Neo-Classical simplicity and proportions of the front façade. This house was occupied from 1926 to 1963 by the University Womens’ Club and then demolished in 1963.
