Mrs. Shirres House(5/1910-10/1914) du Musée Avenue [59 Ontario Avenue], Montreal, QC, Canada Residential, Urban house [basement, 2 floors, attic, 9 bedrooms, servants' hall, nurse's room]; brick and stone; wall bearing Client: Mrs. Shirres Description: In 1910, the Maxwell brothers designed a residence for Mrs. Shirres on Du Musée Avenue. The distinctive character of this project is its Château style with a steeply hipped roof. The layout resembles Edward Maxwell’s work before the turn of the 20th century. In this period of Edward’s architecture, it is rare not to find an asymmetrical plan using a central hall. The Maxwell brothers used the stair hall as the organizing element. The drawing room, living room, dining room and pantry were arranged around the core. The elevations show a tall chimney, conical dormers and a large gable dormer composed and crowned with pinnacles and spires. The windows are ornamented with shallow relief carving. This house was demolished when Doctor Penfield Avenue (McGregor Street) was extended east. Holdings: Urban house (basement, 2 floors, attic, 9 bedrooms, servants' hall, nurse's room); brick and stone; wall bearing | |
