J.S. Shearer House([1904])
Lachine, QC, -
Residential, Urban house [basement, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms]; wood; wall bearing

Client: Mrs. J.S. Shearer
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In addition to the elaborate shingled houses, the Maxwell brothers also designed and built modest and unpretentious cottages. A good example is the summer residence for Mrs. J.S. Shearer in Lachine, Quebec. John Sharp Shearer, who was a commission and general wholesale merchant, a member of the board of trade, and the governor of the Montreal General Hospital, ommissioned the Maxwell brothers to design a small cottage for his wife in 1904. The result was a simple two-story structure on a rusticated stone base with an unusual hip roof characteristic of Maxwells’ work, a dormer window on one side of the roof, and a shed extension at the rear of the house. The entrance was recessed in the half of the front façade forming a small verandah.
