A.T. Buchanan House(1903)
Pine Avenue West, Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [detached, basement, 2 floors, attic, 4 bedrooms, 2 servants' rooms]; brick; composite

Client: A.T. Buchanan
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: This urban house for A.T. Buchanan was located on the north side of Pine Avenue, possibly between existing Alexander Cross (71) and J.Henry Birks (25) residences, and was attached on the east side to another property. The south elevation was symmetrical, with colossal columns flanking the main entrance and supporting a broken pediment, while side elevations were composed more freely as the volumes of the house are extended to the rear. On the ground floor, the drawing and dining room (with back to back fireplaces) and the library opened unto a east hall lit by a north facing window. A wooden screen concealed the staircase from the hall. The kitchen and the servants’ hall were housed in an extension to the north, beyond the kitchen. The first floor comprised four main chambers, two on either side of the central hall. The servant’s room were above the kitchen. This very serene and classical brick residence stood south of the Montreal General Hospital and was eventually demolished.
