Bank of Ottawa Building, Proposal(1903)
Saint-James Street and Dollard Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Commercial, Office building [8 floors]

Client: Bank of Ottawa
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: A tall building on a site south of Saint-James was proposed where the present Royal Bank Head Office (York and Sawyer architects) stands. Plans called for a banking hall on the ground floor with seven floors of rental office space above, each floor comprised of nine offices with services (stairs, elevator, washrooms and vault) lit by a inner light court. The narrow, Saint-James elevation is an interesting Beaux-Arts treatment of the tall office building façade into base/shaft/capital with the three lower floors heavily signalled by pilasters and pediments and the upper floor curving windows and cornice marking the top. It is unknown if this was to be a head office for the Bank of Ottawa; a branch built on Park Avenue, at the intersection of Fairmount Street, still exists. This proposal, however, never progressed beyond the preliminary stage.

Holdings: Office building (8 floors)
4 Drawings: 4 blueprints
4 Presentation drawings: ground floor plan, first floor plan, typical floor plan, front elevation
