Description: A.A. Allan, born 1860, nephew of Sir Hugh Allan and a vice-president in the Allan Line Steamships, had this house designed by Boston architects Rotch and Tilden in 1890-1891. In 1910, an extension to the southern façade included a lavishly decorated billiard room; the entrance porch was also added at this time. This elegant L-shaped, red sandstone-clad residence and its adjacent northern neighbor, the Hugh A. Allan (4) residence at 289 Stanley Street, became property of the Sisters of the Congrégation Notre-Dame and the École des Arts et Métiers in 1948 until its sale to the Union des Artistes in 1994.

Holdings: Urban house (alteration: billiard-room)
17 Drawings: 17 ink on linen
17 Working drawings: floor plans, elevations, sections, billiard-room, stable
Comment: 14 drawings for Andrew Alexander Allan's house and stable by Rotch and Tilden, Architects, dated 9/1889 © 5/1890, are included. The prominent Boston firm of Rotch and Tilden, active from 1880 to 1895, designed Allan's house at 287 Stanley St. The plans probably came to the Maxwell office when subsequent additions and alterations were carried out.
