Mrs. A. Alexander House(1909-10)
[218] Bishop Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [attached, basement, 3 floors, 5 bedrooms, 2 servants' rooms]; stone; composite

Client: Mrs. A. Alexander
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The A. Alexander house was a beautiful, stone-faced, tall urban dwelling with a typical plan. It featured two large reception rooms at the front (dining and drawing rooms) and a long extension to the back (palm room, study and kitchen). Bedrooms occupied first and second floors (with the large front room left ''unfinished''). The main elevation is elegant and restrained with a balustrade crowning the wood cornice. A two-story bay window is well proportioned to the main entrance. A drawing shows a bathroom addition on the attic floor in 1911 for a Dr. Russell. The house stood north of the partly existing Royal George Apartments (1452 Bishop Street) and faced the Bishop Court Apartments (1463 Bishop Street). The site was used as a parking lot for some time; recently a new Concordia University building, the Howard Webster Library (which integrates the Royal George façade) was built upon it.
