E.J. Maxwell Factory(1907)
Nazareth Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Industrial, Factory [3 floors]; brick; concrete frame

Client: E.J. Maxwell
Architect: E. Maxwell & G.C. Shattuck

Description: The E.J. Maxwell (678) factory has a very modest and sparse layout that is quite similar to the Marlatt & Armstrong Co. warehouse design in terms of the placement of the main office to the right of the main entrance vestibule and the hoist at the side of the building. This was a simple workshop design, the floor plan does not reveal any separation of work stations. All three floors are identical except for a smith to the rear of the shop on the ground floor. This flat roof building’s cornice was constructed of wood and the foundation masonry built of rubble. During this period Edward Maxwell was briefly associated with George Cutler Shattuck (1864-1923). Shattuck, was born in Masachusetts. He began work as a draftsman with Shepley. Rutan & Collidge. Around 1899 he came to Montreal and joined Edward, staying with him until 1902 when William Maxwell joined the firm.
