R.J. Tooke Store and Office Building(7/1895-1/1896)
Sainte-Catherine and Peel Streets, Montreal, QC, Canada
Commercial, Office building: [basement, 3 floors]; stone; wall bearing

Client: R.J. Tooke
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: In 1895 Mr. R.J. Tooke built an office building on a lot he owned on the southwest corner of Sainte-Catherine and Peel Street. Mr. Tooke commissioned Edward Maxwell for the design. The result was a three-storey building that follows design principles similar to those used in the design of the Henry Birks & Sons Store and Office Building (100) in 1893. The exterior consists of a tripartite façade composition marked by prominent round-arched windows. The whole building was crowned by a boldly projecting cornice. On ground level, the corner is articulated by a sequence of columns. The floor windows were decorated with cast-iron lintels that form a belt-course supporting the masonry of the structure allowing for maximum display areas at street level. The main entrance located on Peel Street was accessed through a massive arched doorway. The entire ground plan was divided by a partition, which runs perpendicular to Sainte-Catherine Street.
