Residential, Urban house [addition: basement: furnace room; ground floor: smoking room; first floor: dressing room; alteration: attic] on paper; 3 pencil on paper

Client: Mr. Blackwell and Mr. Stephenson
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: Kenneth William Blackwell, engineer, President of Montreal Steel Works and son of M.T.E. Blackwell, Vice-President and General Manager, Grand Trunk Railway (1857-1863), owned a house at 836 Sherbrooke Street West. An expansion to the rear accommodated a smoking room at the ground floor and a dressing room on the first floor. Mr. Stephenson’s residence was preserved save the main entrance door and steps. The twin houses had typical floor layouts: the kitchen and servants’ rooms in the basement; the parlour and dining room with pantry on ground floor; and bedrooms on the first and attic floors. The popular bay window projection adorned the drawing room and the main bedroom above. It is unclear if the rather spectacular Palladian window dormer and balcony railing above the bay window are Maxwell’s work or were already in place at the time. Mr. Blackwell also had a house in Gaspé (300) altered by the Maxwells.
