Description: Saint-Clement’s Belcher Memorial Church was created in 1897. This proposal from Edward Maxwell is a modest church building in brick with Neo-gothic details. The main entrance on Wellington Street features a simple entrance porch with a stair leading to the furnace room in the basement, a vestry and direct access to the nave. Side elevations are left extremely plain with four bays, -three bays for the nave proper and one bay for the chancel, -lit by a larger Gothic window. Architect Robert H. MacDonald was in fact chosen to design the present church that same year. His project shares many architectural details with the Maxwell proposal and adheres to the same frugality and serenity. It was extended twice by the same architect and still exists today.
