J. B. Allan House([1895-1896])
Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue [Senneville], QC, Canada
Residential, Country house [2 floors, 6 bedrooms]; brick; wall bearing

Client: James Bryce Allan
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: This country house for James Bryce Allan, a transportation magnate, is typical of Edward Maxwell’s early eclectic and picturesque work. The house stretches parallel to Lac des Deux-Montagnes, at the western tip of Island of Montreal. The main entrance on the opposite elevation leads to the central hall, a typical feature of North American country houses of the time and of many urban houses by the Maxwells such as the J.T. Davis house (368). The octagonal library is located within a tower overlooking the lake and capped with a conical roof. Left of the hall is the dining room with the kitchen beyond. A three-bedroom wing is to the right. A large outdoor gallery wraps around the house on the lakeside and connects the library with the hall and the bedrooms. Three more bedrooms are found on the first floor. The exterior combines brick walls, portholes windows, half-timbering and steep shingle roofs in a dramatic and asymmetrical composition.
