Saint-Bruno, QC, Canada
Residential, Country house [basement, 2 floors, attic, 8 bedrooms]; stone; wood; wall bearing

Client: E.L. Pease
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: In 1896, E. L. Pease, Vice-president and the General Manager of the Royal Bank of Canada, purchased a large estate in the Montarville Seigneury bordering Lake Moulin and Lake Daisy on Mount Saint-Bruno. Mr. Pease hired E. Maxwell for this project. He designed a shingle-and-boulder-style residence based on H.H. Richardson in which the combination of French details, such as the steep tower bays, and Queen Anne elements that include tall brick chimneys, conbelled balconies and a carriage porch enhanced the exterior of the house. The layout of the Pease House was designed around a vast living room with large bow windows. In addition to the main house, there was a remarkable building combining garages, stable, barn and farmhouse. The plan was very similar to that of the barn on Minister’s Island for Sir William Van Horne. The proposed plan, if built according to the existing plans, would also have been a remarkable auxiliary building. Eventually, the Pease country house was demolished and replaced by a sizeable stone house.
