Saint-Matthew Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [basement, attic, 3 bedrooms, 1 servant's room]; stone; composite

Client: F.E. Gilman
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: The urban house for Mr. Gilman on Saint-Matthew Street in Montreal was one of the earlier residential projects by Edward Maxwell. Contrary to other homes, this was a relatively small structure extending only two storeys in height. On the ground floor, the entrance vestibule leads to the central hall, which opens onto the drawing room, dining room, and kitchen. The stairs in the hall give access to two bedrooms and a sitting room on the first floor. The façade details were minimal with plain windows and door openings. All the windows were decorated with keystones. A large gable roof with large dormer window caps the whole building.
