Alexander Cross House([1895])
1597 Pine Avenue West [751 Pine Avenue], Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [semi-detached, basement, 2 floors, attic, 5 bedrooms]; brick; composite

Client: Alexander Cross
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: Alexander G. Cross, Judge of the Supreme Court of the Province of Quebec from 1907, was born in Ormstown, Ontario in 1858. He graduated from McGill University and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1881 and created King’s Council in 1899. At the time this charming brick house was built, Mr. Alexander was still single. He married Laura Buchanan in 1907. The first floor includes only the master bedroom, a dressing room, a library and a guest room. The ground floor, entered at the west side, features a full-width drawing room, a public hall with an inglenook and fireplace connecting entrance and main staircase, and the dining room/pantry/kitchen at the rear. The elevations reveal a somewhat subdued Château style. A round bay window at the front is capped by a conical roof and an oversized dormer festooned with pinnacles. The side entrance façade is centred around a portly Richardsonian segmental arch above the entrance niche. Echoed by a tiny oriel on the first floor, a spectacular dormer penetrates the slate roofline and is also adorned with pinnacles. The property is sometimes referred to as the Selkirk Cross house and still exists. Like the former J. Henry Birks house (25), it belongs to the Montreal General Hospital, but now bears the name Durnford House. Mr. Cross eventually moved to 369 Metcalfe Avenue, Westmount. He was Alderman for that city several years and elected Mayor in 1903-1904.
