Client: Miss Cochrane and Mrs. Lowden
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: The Miss Cochrane and Mrs. Lowden residences were two row houses, each 30’ x 56’, facing Sherbrooke Street at the south-west corner of Saint-Matthew Street. Miss Cochrane’s house (House no. 1) had windows along the side street, an oriel and a three-arch porch similar to that of James Crathern’s (69) house on MacGregor Street. The main elevations on Sherbrooke Street were subdued and elegant, the round bay windows turned into a three-sided projection above the first floor cornice, capped by a shallow conical roof and surmounted by simplified, mock Dutch gables. The entrance hall with segmented arches above and ironwork in the tympanum, provided elegance and refinement. Floors plans were similar with some minor differences: the front room in the basement was a billiard’s room in House 1, a servant’s hall in House 2; and kitchens were in the back. First floor in House 1 had Mr. King and Miss Cochrane’s bedrooms, a large sitting room and a bathroom, while the large front bedroom in the attic was that of Mr. J.C. King. Mrs. Lowden’s bedroom included a fireplace and was adjacent to a dressing room. Both were situated to the rear of the second house, while the front sitting room and the spare bedroom overlooked the street. The attic in House 2 had servants’ bedrooms and three more chambers. Other than the trademark bay window façades and the main entrance on either side, this pair formed a very restrained and serene residential design. It may have been built around 1893-1895, the same time a stable for Mr. J.C. King (115) designed by E. Maxwell was built on Saint-Matthew Street. Both houses and the stable were demolished. Their site is now occupied by the Tour Versailles Hotel at 1808 Sherbrooke Street West.
