Description: This beautiful house, built for Hugh A. Allan (4) in 1895 according to Edward Maxwell plans, was altered for Mr. Henry Wyndham Beauclerk, a businessman born in Ireland. He came to Canada in 1906, was a director of the Bank of Montreal and the Brompton Pulp and Paper Co. and had offices in the Transportation Building on Saint-James Street at Saint-François Xavier Street. The architects implemented some minor alterations to decorative features such as stair balustrades, mantels and woodwork while the attic floor was expanded to the rear to accommodate four servants’ rooms. Mr. Beauclerk’s duration of ownership is unclear but the house and the one to the south belonging to Andrew. A. Allan (254) were turned into a school in 1948 and then to offices for the Union des Artistes in 1994.
