Louis de Gaspé Beaubien House(1909)
448 Côte-Sainte-Catherine Road, Outremont, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [detached, basement, 2 floors, attic, 3 bedrooms, 1 servant's room]; brick; composite

Client: Louis G. Beaubien
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Grander and more ostentatious than his brother Charles Philippe Beaubien (293) neighbouring residence, this symmetrical, brick-faced mansion had its long elevation proudly facing the road. The central part featured an entrance porch and balcony supported by Tuscan columns and flanked by two slightly projecting wings with brick pilasters and quoins at each corner. The ground floor betrayed the property’s formal stance. From the axially-placed vestibule with coat room and lavatory on either side, one entered the central hall with the grand, semicircular staircase straight ahead. To the east were the reception room and the library, opening to the verandah. The grand drawing room across the hall extends the depth of the house, save an eight feet-wide palm room facing the mountain at the rear. Behind the stairs, an extension was built on the central axis with the kitchen and pantry on this floor and servants’ room above. The formal, majestic layout is somewhat replicated on the first floor, with two chambers to the left, a boudoir opening to the front gallery above the entrance and the spacious main chamber and dressing room above the drawing room. Refined interior details, classical symmetry and affluent, sophisticated French flavour throughout is typical of later residential work by the Maxwells, no doubt indebted to William’s Beaux-Arts training. This house was demolished in 1974.
