Charles C. Ballantyne Residence([1910-11])
3484 Mountain Street [678 Mountain Street], Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [detached, basement, 2 floors, 5 bedrooms, 3 servants' rooms]; brick; composite

Client: C.C. Ballantyne
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: C.C. Ballantyne (1867-1950), born in Colquhoun, Ontario, joined the Sherwin-Williams Co., a paint manufacturer founded in Cleveland, in 1882, becoming Sales Manager at the opening of their Montreal plant in 1895. He was named Vice-President and Managing Director in 1911 when he purchased the company. He was later elected mayor of Montreal West and finally called to the Senate. As they often did, the Maxwells placed the longer axis of the house parallel to the river. The steep Mansard roof with its oversized dormers, the formal central bay of the Mountain Street façade framed by brick pilasters, the interplay of chimney stacks and bay windows is reminiscent of French châteaux. Mr. Ballantyne occupied this imposing villa until his death in 1950. The house is called Résidence Lavalin and houses notably a daycare centre.
