515-517 Pine Avenue West (303 Pine Avenue West), Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [attached, basement, 2 floors, 3 bedrooms, 1 servant's room]; brick and stone; wall bearing

Client: Andrew and John D. Baile
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Andrew Baile came to Montreal in 1869 from Quebec City where he had been active as coal merchant in his father’s business, founded in 1845. He quickly established his own firm, Andrew Baile Limited, and remained a prominent Montreal coal merchant until his death in 1922. John David Baile replaced him as the president of the company. The Baile houses are a couple of row houses very similar in plan and elevation to those for Dr. Howard T. Barnes (291) and G. Andrews (256), but much deeper than the latter. The main elevation features the popular bay window but rendered more elaborate with exquisite taste in Byzantine details; the first floor windows are framed by small columns. The arches above the entrance porches have beautiful brickwork. The front part of each house comprises a drawing room and a library with an alcove (mantel and decoration in the Arts and Crafts style) with dining room and kitchen at the rear. Three bedrooms, a playroom and a servants’ room make up the first floor. There is a billiard room in the basement, below the drawing room. Great attention and imagination was devoted to the design of fireplaces in varied styles and materials. McGill University owns the properties housing the offices of the Family Medicine Department.
