Mrs. J.R. Adams House, Alterations and Additions (The Canterbury)(1904 [1904-5])
3500 Durocher Street (64 Durocher Street), Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [addition: 6 apartments: 2 bedrooms and 1 servant's room each]; brick and stone; wall bearing

Client: Mrs. J.R. Adams
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The elevation presented here depicts the main Durocher Street elevation before the alterations. The house had been the property of the Adams family since its constrution (ca. 1873). In 1904, the Mansard roof was removed and the front wall reclad in red brick with Neo-Georgian details. The alterations involved splitting the house in half, creating two long apartments per floor. Inclusion of servant’s rooms led to incongruous angles and decidedly cramped spaces in some flats. The ground floor apartments have direct access and additional rooms in the basement which also includes the usual service rooms for the tenants (storage, etc. ). If the Maxwells as architects designed magnificent mansions, they were on occasion called upon to subdivide large houses into smaller rental units. This example, with its wonderful redesigned façade, is better handled than the brutal retro-fitting that would take place in many Montreal fine houses in the next 50 years. The house still stands at the northwest corner of Milton Street and is now called The Canterbury.
