Client: A. Ramsay & Son
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Alexander Ramsay (1840-1916) took over the manufacturing of paints, varnish and oils from his father Alexander Ramsay (1813-1867), who came from Scotland in 1835 and established the firm in 1842 in Montreal. The Inspector Street premises included a six-floor factory building at Saint-Paul and Inspector, adjacent to a store on Inspector Street. Further south; a Troy Laundry occupied a three-story unit. Warehouses and stables comprised the rest of the compound, a plain assemblage of reinforced concrete-framed and brick-clad industrial spaces. A. Ramsay’s son Walter B. Ramsay (born 1881) took over as president in early 1916. All buildings at this location have been razed. The Ramsay Building at 417 des Récollets Street, built in 1858 and used as showroom, store and warehouse, still exists. Alexander Ramsay’s house at 495 Argyle Avenue, Westmount (186), was also renovated by the Maxwell firm but later demolished. See: "L’édifice Ramsay."
