Hartland MacDougall House (Ashburton)(10/1900)
Dorval, QC, Canada
Residential, Country house [basement, 2 floors, attic, 10 bedrooms]; brick; composite

Client: Hartland MacDougall
Architect: E. Maxwell & G.C. Shattuck

Description: Maj. MacDougall, born in 1840, headed MacDougall Stockbrokers, was the Director of the United Financial Corporation Ltd., and was one of the founders of the Mount Royal Club. He commissioned the partnership of Maxwell and Shattuck to design a country home for him off the shore of the Saint-Louis Lake, when Edward had just completed the work on the Dorval Yacht Club. The country house Ashburton, was essentially rectangular in plan with two lateral projections with elaborate Classical ornamentation. The entrance front was divided into three sections defined by quoins and pilasters. A pediment over the front door was repeated at the roof level, where the ornamentation was more elaborate, with pilasters topped with pinnacles. All window openings were elegantly crowned with keystones, which is a common feature in most of Edward’s projects. The plan was based on Bois-de-la-Roche, the principal body of the building being flanked by two projecting wings to form a quadrangle. The entrance led to a large hall dominated by an elegant fireplace and the staircase. All the interiors featured pine wood detailing and intricate carvings. Three large rooms occupied the space beyond the hall: a drawing room, dining room, and billiard room. These rooms had broad French windows that opened onto the covered verandah, with a view towards the lake. All together the house accommodated a total of ten bedrooms out of which five were located in the first floor and the remaining in the attic floor. The basement was comprised of a store room, furnace room, and rain water tank. The Hartland MacDougall summer residence was sold to Mr. J.W. McConnell and was altered during the 1920s. The architect Kenneth Guscotte Rea, who was hired for this job, created a spacious living room by removing the wall between the drawing room and billiard room. The new kitchen was added to the eastern side of the house and a solarium to the west side. A large terrace was also introduced to the exterior of the house, which faced the lake. The summerhouse survived for sixty years and was destroyed by fire in the 1960s.
