E. A. Whitehead House([1902])
Dorval, QC, Canada
Residential, Cottage [basement, 2 floors; stable: 2 floors]; wood; composite

Client: E. A. Whitehead
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: Colonel Edward Ashworth Whitehead was an insurance agent and broker, and one of the founders of the Montreal Arts Association now the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (273). In 1903, he commissioned Edward Maxwell to design a shingle style summer cottage on a large domain on the shores of Lake Saint-Louis in Dorval. It was an imposing residence flanked by turrets and extended by wings that were set back from the main body. On the ground floor, one bedroom with a loggia was located on one side and, at the other side, the kitchen. The hall was located at the center of the house, the dining and library rooms with octagonal bays were placed at both sides of the hall. A broad verandah created a picturesque look, while the principal façade was enhanced by long sloping roofs and columns built of rusticated stone. The use of shingles to cover the whole cottage created a certain harmony with the surrounding lawns, forest and beaches. This simplified exterior was in marked contrast with the elegance of its interior. A stable and water tower were the auxiliary buildings on the estate. The Whitehead House was destroyed by fire in the early 1980s.
