W. Wainwright House, Alterations(1897)
156 Metcalfe Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house

Client: W. Wainwright
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: In 1897, the Maxwell brothers did some alterations to the house of Mr. William Wainwright, who was the Vice-president of the G.T. Railway System and Second Vice-president of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company. The plans show an attached house configured in an L-shaped plan characterised by a circular bay window facing the street. Despite the fact that the plans of the ground, first, and second floors do not indicate the alterations done by Edward Maxwell, it is presumed that his interventions were related to an entire re-arrangement of the layout. According to the basement plan, which is the only one that indicates the alterations, the kitchen was located on this level in order to enlarge the ground floor to accommodate the social and private rooms. The first and second floors show new partitions defining spaces for the bathrooms and closets.
