C. Coughlin House(-)
Nanton, AB, Canada
Residential, Cottage ([ floors, 5 bedrooms]; wood; composite

Client: C. Coughlin
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The cottage for C. Coughlin is located in Nanton, Southern Alberta, a small town of 1700 inhabitants. Nanton was incorporated as a village in 1903 and as a town in 1907. It lies 35 miles south of Calgary. It is unclear whether the Coughlin property is within the town limits or in a country setting. It is a more modest version of the Markey House (496) in Saint-Andrews or the Whitehead House (220) in Dorval. As in these larger residences, its central, two-storey volume is centred around a large living room opening to both west and east sides with four beams supporting the ceiling. Two wings on either side create a shallow V-shaped plan. The north wing comprises the kitchen and pantry, while the south wing includes a bedroom and the bathroom. A stair behind the large fireplace leads to the four bedrooms on the first floor. A sprawling verandah to the west and a smaller one to the east, nestled between the wings , open onto the landscape. The walls are clapboard and are devoid of any complex details. The drawings bear neither contractor’s signatures nor dates; it is difficult to ascertain whether the house was built at all.
