96 Prince of Wales Street, Saint-Andrews, NB, Canada
Residential, Country house; wood; wall bearing

Client: Thomas George Shaughnessy
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: Sir Thomas George Shaughnessy, born in 1853, was the Vice-president of CPR and a prominent Montreal citizen. Edward Maxwell was hired to design his summer residence in Saint-Andrews. The result is a long two-storey shingle styled house with a bent L-shaped plan flanked by two towers. The plans show a large verandah wrapping around the front side of the house until it joined the verandah at the far rear end. The interior plan was designed around a large living hall with a massive fireplace. The distinctive feature of this house is the prominent circular tower that protruded from the living room capped by a conical roof. The entrance is recessed and is emphasized by the larger dormer window above it on the second level. The house is now owned by the Province of New Brunswick.
