Client: Thomas Samuel
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: In 1896, Mr. Thomas Samuel engaged Edward Maxwell to design his home in Westmount. The result was a two-storey semi-detached brick house. The elevations show a Tudor style house flanked by two projecting turrets crowned by polygonal roofs. The house is divided in two parts with the party wall marked the front façade by the projecting conservatory spaces of both houses. The fundamental symmetry, both in elevation and plan is broken by the ground level access to each house. The reflected pair idea evolved from the English terrace house, as a strategy to reduce construction costs. Edward was probably familiar with the double mansion built by Duncan McIntyre on Dorchester Avenue and for which his father was the carpentry contractor. The front entrance of both houses opens onto a small vestibule that leads to a reception hall. To the right of the hall is the drawing room, and to the left the dining room, which opens directly onto the kitchen pantry. The staircases are arranged along the partition wall. Unlike many of Edward’s later houses, the interiors here are dark because the light is admitted only on three sides and through the deeply inset windows. Although modest, this house shares essential architectural elements with the McIntyre Angus House. It shows Edward’s ability to respond to different programmatic needs and budgets of his clients.
