Newfoundland Hotel(1/1900-7/1900)
Saint-Johns, NF, Canada
Commercial, Hotel [3 floors, attic; laundry and power house]; wood; composite

Client: R.G. Reid
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: Sir Robert G. Reid, a railway contractor, was born at Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland. In 1871 he came to America and took charge of the construction of many bridges and railways across North America. In 1893, Reid obtained the right, conferred upon him for a period of ten years to operate the road between St-Johns and the West Coast, connected by a steam engine train with the Canadian mainland. In 1901, Sir Robert G. Reid, with the Newfoundland government, initiated the project of the Avalon Hotel at Fort William. Its construction was halted when a fire began in nearby buildings. Interest to complete the building resumed again in 1910 and finally in 1926, the Newfoundland Hotel opened, based on a design of a three-storey Shingle style building by Edward Maxwell. The distinctive features of the front elevation are the two projecting towers one circular and one octagonal capped with conical roofs. They flank the central pavilion establishing a balanced symmetrical composition. Other remarkable elements are the gable dormers and the ground floor verandahs embellished with an arrangement of classical columns at the front entrance. The hotel’s plan was an elongated rectangular L-shape. After passing a magnificent loggia, the visitor enters the central rotunda opening onto a reading room and a dining room. The first floor, second floor and third floor include the bedrooms, which are distributed along a double-loaded corridor. Although the Newfoundland Hotel is relatively a small hotel, its design shows a careful composition of the different masses within a coherent and masterful Shingle style language.
