Mr. Pugsley’s House(3/1901)
Saint-Andrews, NB, Canada
Residential, Country house [detached, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms, 3 servants' rooms]

Client: Mr. Pugsley
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: The Hon. William Pugsley was born in Sussex, New Brunswick in 1850. In 1885, he was elected to the New Brunswick Legislature. He was also elected Prime Minister of NB in 1907 and, under the Hon. L.J. Tweedie, appointed to the post of Lieutenant-Governor. In 1901, Hon. William Pugsley engaged Edward Maxwell to design his summer residence in Saint-Andrews. The result was a long two-storey shingled house, which follows the same architectural patterns of previous country houses designed by Maxwell at the turn of the century. There is a large verandah wrapping around three sides of the house and the interior plan was designed around the entrance hall, which opens onto a dining room and a spacious parlour room. The elevation combines French elements, such as the steep tower-bay of the parlour room, which ends in a conical roof above the line of the main structure. The first floor includes four bedrooms and two servants’ rooms.
