Client: A.T. Paterson
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: Alexander T. Paterson was born at Irvine, Ayrshire , Scotland, in 1833. He came to Canada in 1850 as the President and Managing Director of the Londonderry Iron Co., and Director of the Bank of Montreal. He also was one of the chartered governors of the Royal Victoria Hospital. In 1895, Edward designed two semi-detached houses for Mr. Paterson in Longueuil, Quebec. The plans show a mirrored composition. The layout for each house consists of a central hall opening onto a dining room, drawing room, and an octagonal library. The first floor contains four bedrooms organized around a central hall and the staircase. The elevation is a perfect symmetrical composition of vertical and horizontal elements under a gable roof with gable dormers. A distinctive feature is the long verandah along the front elevation that creates a feeling of a single detached house for both residences.
