Description: The A.L. McKillup building is a two storey rectangular structure. This building accommodated a large ground floor laboratory with an assayer’s furnace* The assayer’s office was located next to the laboratory. A narrow passageway from the entrance led to the main stairwell and more offices upstairs. There were four equally-sized offices, one placed in each corner of the building. A hall crossed through the middle, bisecting the floor plan in two. The stairwell and lavatory were placed on opposite sides with a skylight situated between them. The basement consisted of the coal cellar and main furnace, with a secondary entrance at the rear of the building. * Presumably for the testing of a metal or ore to determine its ingredients and quality. An assayer’s office awards hallmarks for the standard of gold, silver, and platinum
