J. McClure House([1894])
Grant Street, Longueuil, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [detached, 2 floors, 5 bedrooms]; wood; wall bearing

Client: J. McClure
Architect: E. Maxwell

Description: The McClure House, with its gambrel roof had a west-side dormer on the second floor that was segmented into three pedimented windows. Each separate window was crowned with a circular crosshatched motif. Queen Anne characteristics, such as the south bay window and the large verandah wrapping itself around both side walls as seen more elaborately in other houses designed by the Maxwells, were stripped to its bare essentials for this project. The main entrance was a simple doorway featuring a small porch and a coat room next to it. Other access points were gained through sets of French doors in the smoking room, drawing room, and the dining room on the ground floor. The columns for the verandah were unadorned and modest. The kitchen was located in a wing from the main section of the house and had its own entrance. The first floor was designated for five bedrooms of equal proportion. Each bedroom was designed with its own shelving space identical and indented in the wall. As well, there was a small darkroom adjacent to the bathroom. A trap door in the hall led to a fairly sized attic with clerestory windows. A small balcony, directly above the ground floor entrance, was at the top of the stairs. The economy of space no doubt made for the concise appeal of the house.
