Residential, Urban house [detached, basement, 2 floors, attic]; brick; composite

Client: N.A. Timmins
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Noah A. Timmins, merchant and mining operator, was born at Mattawa, Ontario, in 1867. He was the president of Hollinger Mine, amassing a great fortune during the cobalt silver rush. Mr Timmins commissioned the Maxwell brothers to design his urban house in Westmount. The architects designed a French style mansion. Severe rectangular plans characterised this house built in red brick with symmetrical facades enhanced by pediments, pilasters, and porticoes. The front entrance door is composed with an elaborate broken pediment supported by Corinthian pilasters. On the ground floor, the plans show a spacious central hall and vast drawing room marking the central axis of the main block, with the dining room on one side and the living room on the other. Two small blocks at both extremes contain the kitchen and the den, respectively embraced by a greenhouse and a loggia.
