Edwin O’Dell House(11/1910-2/1912) 276 Montague Street, Saint-Andrews, NB, Canada Residential, Country house [detached, 2 floors, attic]; wood; composite Client: Edwin O'Dell Description: In 1910, Edwin O’Dell engaged Edward and William Maxwell to design his summer residence in Saint-Andrews. The result was a house with classical details like columns around the verandah, pediments and pilasters. The main façade is a symmetrical composition under a gabled roof. The front axis is marked by a portico, which is supported by columns and surmounted by an entablature and a pediment. The whole composition shows a strict order and restrained language, which is manifested by the lack of decorative elements, found in other summer homes deigned by the Maxwell brothers.
The layout follows the Maxwells’ formula of some of their summer residences consisting of an L-shaped composition. A vast hall with a magnificent fireplace is flanked by a den and a dining room. The service rooms, including the kitchen and pantry, form a perpendicular wing at the rear. The most interesting and distinctive element of this residence is the continuous broad verandah wrapping around the front and left side of the house. The building is finished with clapboard, the first example of this type designed by the Maxwells. The O’Dell House is well-preserved and nestled amid the lawns and rose gardens of Saint-Andrews.
