W.S. Mitchell Cottage(9/1907-10/1907)
Vernon, BC, Canada
Residential, Cottage [detached, basement, 2 floors]; wood; composite

Client: W.S. Mitchell
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1907, W.S. Mitchell engaged the Maxwell brothers to design his summer cottage in Vernon, British Columbia. The result was a design characterized by its restrained exterior, and use of classical details. The entrance is marked by a portico crowned by a broken pediment. Two two-storey high pilasters with a broken triangular pediment marked the exterior elevation of the drawing room. Its verticality is emphasized by the treatment of triple windows linked together. The plan is a simple and functional symmetrical layout consisting of a central hall, which articulates the dining room, sitting room, drawing room, and kitchen. This distribution allows a well lit interior since the main rooms have two exposed façades. The verandah and windows’ proportion resembles the C.F. Smith house (609) designed by the Maxwells the same year. The Mitchell Cottage is a good example of the Maxwells’ talent to respond to a wide variety of budgets and styles represented by their clients.
