F.W. McColl House, Additions and Alterations(1909)
94 King Street, Saint-Andrews, NB, Canada
Residential, Country house [additions: ground floor: kitchen, ice room; first floor: 3 bedrooms]; wood; wall bearing

Client: F. McColl
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: As for many of the Maxwells’ Saint-Andrews country houses, The shingle style with a gambrel roof was favoured. The additions and alterations to McColl’s country home, was no exception. The original structure was a medium-sized rectangular brick house with a gabled roof, built by Samuel Frye, son-in-law of Captain David Mowat. A lengthy two-storey extension at a 45-degree angle was added for the kitchen, larder and ice room. A two-tiered gambrel roof and spires capped this. The kitchen had a separate entrance, with its own porch. The ice room was designed to be a well-functioning unit, with its own refrigerator and ventilation system. It stands as an attractive structure in its own right. The floor above the kitchen was to be for additional servants’ rooms, a bathroom and guestrooms. Cedar posts were used through out the interior and exterior, mainly as posts for the two verandahs that were constructed, but were also incorporated into the kitchen basement, living room and ice room plans. The smoking room, dining room and living room were given new wood paneling, a new fireplace and a Dutch wallpaper frieze. The living room opened up to the spacious main verandah. Its roof was used as a balcony for the upper floor. The window for the upstairs bathroom was converted into French doors through which access could be gained to this balcony. A wide variety of artfully placed window designs were implemented throughout the premises, marking the free range granted to the Maxwell’s for this project. The partitioning of space directly above the living room was sectioned into three separate bedrooms. A paired Doric column portico with a pediment was to shelter the front entrance. The McColl House served as an antique store called Lukannon Antiques, but now is once again privately owned.
