220 King Street, Saint-Andrews, NB, Canada
Residential, Country house [1 floor, attic, 5 bedrooms]; roughcast and wood; composite

Client: F.H. Markey
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Fredrick Henry Markey, (b 1870) hailed from Bath, England and became a successful Montreal lawyer. He was called to the bar of Quebec in 1895 and worked as a member of the Law firm of Smith, M., Skinner & Hyde. Markey served as governor of the Montreal General Hospital and was a member of many prominent Montreal clubs including the Royal Saint-Lawrence Yacht Club. He was also an active Liberal. France Gagnon Pratte describes Markey’s country home Les Goélands as one of the most impressive of the Saint-Andrews’ summer houses that Maxwell built and indeed, it has a unique architectural form that has certain Victorian elements and Tudor styling but defies classification. What is notable are the twin towers respectively placed at each corner of the front façade. These serve as hub links for the two wings veering off from the central Living room area. The axis of the house is in fact the center of the Living room, with its Herringbone Firebrick hearth. The original floor plans reveal an asymmetrical nature to the house and yet shows how well it manages to keep its balance between interrelated angles and dimensions. A huge verandah that first covered the front façade has since been removed as well as the large dormer window set in the steeply pitched roof between the twin towers. One tower housed an octagonal boudoir on the ground floor with stairs leading to the bedroom above it. The other tower was oval in design, and housed the dining room, with another staircase leading to a bedroom as well. The front façade entrance has also been removed and replaced by French windows, the doorway has been relocated to the boudoir tower. Both wings of the house have also been extended. The original façade was rendered with roughcast and shingles. The Markey House now serves as a restaurant/art gallery/gift shop for Kingsbrae Gardens.
