J.H. Magor House(7/1908-1/1909)
47 Rosemount Avenue, Westmount, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [semi-detached, basement, 3 floors, 8 bedrooms, servants' hall]; brick; composite

Client: J.H. Magor
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1908, the Maxwell brothers designed the residence for J. H. Magor. It consisted of a three-storey brick house. Even though the width of this house was just thirty-two feet, the architects designed an elevation that shows an elegant and sober façade composed of giant order pilasters, a broken pediment containing a semi-circular window on the second floor, two French windows with keystones on the first floor, and the characteristic projecting bay window on the ground level. The symmetrical composition is emphasized by two garlands on the third floor level. The roof level is composed with a balustrade at the ends and a parapet on top of the broken pediment. The ground plans reveals the typical distribution of urban houses designed by Edward at the end of nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. The plan consists of a lateral access leading to a central hall containing a magnificent staircase which divides the house in front and back sections. The landing of the stair is placed perpendicularly to the vestibule emphasizing the spacious dimensions for the stair and hall. The drawing room, the most public room of the house, is located facing the street and its importance is marked by the projecting bay window. The dining room and pantry are located at the middle section, while the kitchen and servants’ hall are placed at the rear.
