Laurentide Paper Company Cottages()
Grand-Mère, QC, Canada
Residential, Cottage [two types: semi-detached, basement, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms; detached, basement, 2 floors, 3 bedrooms]

Client: Laurentide Paper Company
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: The Laurentide Paper Company commissioned the Maxwell brothers to design their cottages located at Grand-Mère where two types were designed in the Shingle-style that reflected a certain continuity in design, with the same stylised motifs, ornamentation, and floor plans of the cottages designed by them for their exclusive clients in Saint-Andrews, NB. The detached cottage consists of a square plan with a corner configured by a series of recessed spaces marking the entrance. The vestibule that connects directly to the kitchen leads to a small entrance hall, which contains the staircase and opens onto the dining and parlour room. The elevations show simple details but complex shapes of the shingled roof, which descends until the ground floor to cover the entrance porch. The two semi-detached cottages are the result of the mirror image of the detached cottage, following the same distribution principles. The units are unified by a steep gable roofs, which follows the same design of the detached cottage.
