H.M. Lamb House(1/1909)
Westmount, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [basement, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms]

Client: H.M. Lamb
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: In 1909, the Maxwell brothers designed a house for Harold M. Lamb, a journalist born in Leatherhead, Surrey, in 1872. The result was a two-storey house with a steep gable roof. The plans show an L-shaped layout. The entrance at the interior corner of the shape leads to the entrance hall that articulates both wings of the house and contains a spacious stair accessing the first floor. The hall opens onto a drawing room, bedroom and library. A broad gallery that runs along the entire back façade characterizes the rear part of the house. Above this gallery, a terrace on the first floor is configured by the projection of the roof. The elevations show a sober and tranquil composition and simple details of French windows and dormers. Although the L-shape is not a common layout, the design for this small house was probably inspired by the Maxwells’ designs for their clients in Senneville, QC and Saint-Andrews, NB.
