Mrs. D. Kiely House(-)
Clandeboye Avenue, Westmount, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [attached, 2 floors, 5 bedrooms]; brick; composite

Client: Mrs. D. Kiely
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Mrs. Kiely’s residence is a compact brick row house, 25 feet wide and 40 feet deep, with a kitchen extension to the rear and a bay window projection to the main façade. The main elevation composition gathers a false Mansard roof, the galvanised iron-capped bay window and the mock triangular pediment above it. This larger bay relates well to the fine proportions of the main entrance bay. A smaller, round pediment caps the entrance bay, above a smaller bedroom window. The entrance door is framed by a Gibbs surround (alternating larger and smaller stone blocks), surmounted by a porthole window. Plans are skilfully drawn and make good use of every square foot. The drawing room opens to the street while the dining room on the other side of the central hall (a typical Maxwell design feature) and staircase overlooks the garden. Both rooms have a fireplace. The kitchen extends further in the courtyard beyond the butler’s pantry. The first floor comprises five bedrooms and the bathroom and features a central corridor, in axis with the main stair, that breaks in four oblique branches towards each of four bedrooms, the fifth one with an additional corridor leading to it in the rear. This house is typical of row housing in the South eastern, more compact section of Westmount and is also another example of Edward and William Maxwell early twentieth-century brick row house designs, alongside the Andrews (256), Baile (279), Barnes (291) and Edwards (390) houses.
