Description: Col. Arthur Hamilton had this house erected just west of the Charles Meredith house (518), on a sloping lot. This sturdy house faced with pressed brick presents its narrow end to Pine Avenue. The entrance façade to the west has the entry centrally placed between bay windows. Entering the ground floor, an oval reception room is accessible directly from the vestibule while a wooded screen mediates access to the hall, the drawing room (facing Pine Avenue), the south oriented dining room and the palm room. Five bedrooms, bathrooms, a playroom and a library (the latter two facing Pine above the drawing room) constitute the upper floors. This comfortable and well-designed residence presents a compact mass of smooth brown brick surfaces animated by varied window openings and projections. Mr. Hamilton owned four other properties on the Montreal Island that were either designed or altered by the Maxwells, notably at 1524-28 Summerhill Avenue (429); on Mount Pleasant Avenue, Westmount (432) and a summer residence in Dorval (96). 1140 Pine Avenue West now belongs to McGill University and houses the Department of Occupational Health.
