Col. Arthur Hamilton House(2/1906-1/1910)
1524-1528 Summerhill Avenue, Westmount, QC, Canada
Residential, Urban house [attached, basement, 3 floors, attic, 8 bedrooms]; wall bearing

Client: Arthur Hamilton
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: Arguably one of the finest residences built by the firm, to a design so tasteful and subdued that it never received much attention. The main façade, clad in a splendid, honey-coloured brick with stone trim, is organized symmetrically. Two main entrances, the one to the west giving access to the kitchen on the ground floor while the east one gave access to a reception room and to the oval staircase, frame a central bay window. Most of the public rooms are found on the first floor: the drawing room lays across the width of the street facade, as is the tradition in Anglo-Saxon terrace houses); a library and the charming oval dining room overlooking the yard. Bedrooms occupy the upper floors. It is unclear whether Hamilton had this house built as his residence or as a speculative venture; the house is sometimes referred to as the Fred Archibald and Ross Simms House. Mr. Collins Simpson Garland and his wife Marjorie K. Rooh lived at 1524 Summerhill until 1912, then moved to a brand-new house just west of it, at 1532 Summerhill. The house has been subdivided into two dwellings, possibly based on plans prepared by Maxwell and Shattuck in 1940 (680, 129.7). Arthur Hamilton owned other houses by the Maxwell firm at 1140 Pine Avenue West (430), at Mount Pleasant Avenue, Westmount (432) and Dorval (96). See: Lambert, Phyllis and Robert Lemire.
