H. & A. Allan Office Building, Additions and Alterations(1904-5)
2 Saint-Peter Street, Montreal, QC, Canada
Commercial, Offices; composite

Client: H. & A. Allan
Architect: E. & W.S. Maxwell

Description: H. & A. Allan was the general shipping agent for the Allan Line of Royal Mill Steamships. The Allan Company’s office building still stands on the waterfront next to The Harbour Commissioners Building (433) at 2 Saint-Peter Street. Both these buildings were originally designed by the architect John William Hopkins. The office building is an elegant edifice, its scale and classical detailing links it visually with John Ostell’s Custom House nearby. The façade, which curves gently with a curve of the street, has a modest, entrance which is given a monumental appearance by the high, arched window and broken pediment above. An inscription on one of the entrance pillars marks the level of water in the great flood of 1886. The Maxwell brothers designed additions and alterations to this building in 1904. The work included modifications in the floor plans, and additions such as the ticket counter room, telephone room, windows, sashes, office finishing, and fittings.
