Description: Maude Caroline Edgar founded Miss Edgar and Miss Cramp’s private school for girls in 1909. Born in Toronto, daughter of Sir J.D. Edgar, KC, M.G., Miss Edgar received her B.A. in Modern Languages from University of Toronto in 1898. She joined the teaching staff of Havergall College, Toronto, the same year, and eventually moved to Montreal to open her own school. She joined forces with Miss Mary Cramp, born in Coventry, England. The Edgar and Cramp school provided elementary and high school education -- with a special emphasis on classics, history and the arts -- and was located in a former 36-room, four-storey residence off Guy Street at number 507. The property originally belonged to William C. Van Horne (210) who at some point advised Miss Cramp to do whatever they liked to improve it, and to not take the trouble to ask him. It included classrooms, boarding rooms, kitchen, etc; tennis and basketball were played behind the green fence surrounding the grounds. In 1910 a rooftop addition provided for two nurse’s bedrooms and a bathroom above the existing second floor at the north west corner. In January 1913, following fire damage, an 18’-8' x 28’ addition to the rear adjacent to existing kitchen towards the east property line, provided two additional bedrooms and a pantry on the ground floor, and 75 open lockers in the basement. More alterations to the bedrooms at the rear on the first floor occurred in 1918. The School is still functioning under the name Miss Edgar and Miss Cramp’s School (ECS) but its premises were moved to 525 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Westmount. See: MacKay, David.
